Windows 11 users have the option to open popular formats like .72 as well as .tar natively apart from RAR files. Some may not know that Microsoft has also released an optional update for Windows 11. It is useful as it enables the users to open & decompress RAR files that too without the need to download any third-party tool like WinRar.

It is worth mentioning that the optional KB50311455 preview update added file support for 10 new file archive formats like .7z, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.zst, .tar.xz, .tgz, .tbz2, .tzst, and .txz,  but it looks like Windows still cannot password protected encrypted files.

Earlier in the year, Microsoft made it public in one of its blogs that it was working on the ability to natively open RAR files during the Build 2023 conference. Call it alteration or advancement there is a constant need to add more features.  It is a well-known fact that Windows already has support for. ZIP files since 1998 however, for some reasons best known to the company, it had stayed away from introducing. RAR support for almost 28 years. This is intriguing, isn't it!

Microsoft has stated that support for new file formats has been added from the open-source lib archive project which also points towards the fact that there is a strong possibility we might get to see support for LZH & XAR formats in times ahead.

Besides support for new file formats, the optional update has the ability or you can say is equipped enough to automatically enable new features from the Windows 11 Moment 4 update, which again includes or incorporates a redesigned File Explorer, a brand new Backup app, support for passkeys and the much-anticipated Co-pilot for Windows. The need of the hour is expansion & upgradation of technology. The companies are aware of the same so they are adding more innovation.

To install the KB50311455 optional update, you have to type ‘Windows Update’ in the search bar and hit enter. Now, in the window that appears, you have to click on ‘Check for Updates’. Remember,  the new update with native RAR support will appear as ‘2023-10 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5031455)’.  Next up you have to install the update and you will be able to open RAR archives on Windows 11 without the help of any third-party tool. The process is fairly simple. It will not be troublesome, that's another fact worth stating out here.
