What is Robotics? Significance of Robotics, Key Advantages of Robots

There is a strong apprehension amongst a certain section of people that Robots or full automation may prove to be extremely harmful, as it may take away their job making them jobless. This fear does not hold water. In fact to speak the truth robots or full automation can bring in a lot of advantages to workplaces. They can enhance the profitability ratio of the organization & have the potential to improve the lives of employees. If an Organisation shares the impact of robots then the majority of the employees will vouch for the need to have such a system in place. To keep the operation running human intervention will always remain significant, but the output of full automation will add to the accuracy & productivity factor.

What is Robotics? Significance of Robotics

It can be described as a field which relates to Computer Science & Engineering. It is about creating Robots. Robotics is a branch of Artificial Intelligence. Robots are used to get the work done in a precise manner including jobs such as welding, housekeeping etc.

Significance of Robotics

It gives us an edge, as it has the capabilities to complete the given task in a short span of time with immense precision. It provides a very good level of service. With the passage of time, it is becoming an integral part of modern-day life. It surely has the strength & expertise to transform lives. It has been already considered as a key element that brings in competitiveness, flexibility & efficiency in large manufacturing of high-end products.

When we talk about Robotics from a business point of view, then Europe stood out having 32% of the current world market. It is worth mentioning that European manufacturers produce 63% of the non-military Robots.

The robotics market is expanding at a fast rate. It will be one of the most important domains which will offer a competitive advantage.

Five major types of Robots

  • Cartesian.
  • Cylindrical.
  • SCARA.
  • 6- Axis.
  • Delta.

Some key advantages of Robots are stated below

1. Safety

Safety is always a prominent factor. The safety of workers cannot be compromised. Letting the worker deals with dangerous machinery or asking them to work in a hazardous condition is a breach of labor laws. Introducing robots to deal with heavy machinery, sharp objects etc will always shield the workers from getting exposed to dangerous situations. It's better to pay for a repair bill rather than taking care of medical expenses or lawsuits. It makes sense to delegate dangerous tasks to a robot. This will be a welcome step for workers who are being subjected to situations that are somewhat risky. By eliminating the risk factor & letting the worker do other parts of the same job will be appreciated by one & all including the workers.

2. Speed

Robots don't suffer from a lack of concentration or stress. They can work for a long period of time without any break in between. Robots don't get tired or stressed out. It will never ask for medical leave & will never start to run slow. Robots don't need to be trained after a regular interval of time. Their motivation level never drops nor do they need to attend employee meetings. They act as a great relief to the workers, as employees don't have to work overtime to achieve the desired production level or deadlines. Robots can work round the clock & can speed up the production. These points goes on to reveal that human being cannot outperform a robot when it comes to speed. The rate of production irrespective of the industry will be higher if robots are allowed to run the operation in manufacturing units.

3. Consistency

Robots are apt for multitasking. They can do various jobs without any major impact on their performance. The same goes true when it comes to doing a multitude of things by Robots. They are not impacted by the biological clock as visible with human beings. Shift timings or environmental factors cannot affect the performance level of a Robot. There won't be any unexpected emergencies & they won't require to be relocated to get a sensitive task accomplished. It won't be unfair if we say that automation exhibits better skills & reliability while accomplishing complicated tasks & the level of accuracy, as well as time taken to complete such task, is always more than satisfactory.

4. Perfection

Human beings may be highly skilled, but the probability of committing an error can't be ruled out entirely. Usually, this is not the case with Robots. They have been designed & developed precisely for this purpose i.e. to deliver the goods maintaining a very high rate of accuracy. They are meant & programmed for precise & repetitive motion therefore, it is highly unlikely that robots will commit any major mistakes. Since robots are not offered the opportunity to pick & choose tasks as per their choice & they also don't have the scope to exhibit strange behavior, therefore, they are likely to deliver the best product, time & again. There is very little margin of error in a competitive business & this is a factor that also prompts manufacturing units to make use of robots.

5. Happier Employees

Robots are usually handed overtask that are either monotonous or risky in nature, therefore workers are happy if such categories of tasks are given to robots. It has been observed that generally workers or employees love to associate themselves with work which is more interesting & beneficial from a learning point of view & where there is no risk element involved. In regards to employees who are well qualified the trend has been to go for innovative work projects. They are happy not to be exhausted with certain work if robots can take care of the same. So, workers would rather let the robots get engaged with such works, keeping them safe, protected & stress-free therefore they remain physically & mentally sound.

6. Job Creation

Let's be very clear about the fact that robots don't take away people's jobs. Yes, they change the job. Robot needs human intervention & supervision. They cannot be handed over the entire process. Robot needs to be monitored, so it is not logical to think that the introduction of robots will end up manual jobs or supervision completely. Moreover, if we need more robots then we also need more people to make those robots. Will it not increase job opportunities?. Once an Organisation imparts training to its employees regarding, how to work with robots in that event the employees will be more motivated. They will learn new technical skills or engineering skills. The introduction of Robots will be part of advancement, surely there will be an overwhelming response by the workers once they get to understand the benefits of incorporating Robots as an integral part of the system. This will equally benefit the Organisation as well as the employees.

7. Innovation / Productivity

Robotics technology is a booming concept. We are yet to develop very sophisticated Robots. Even if we fall back on Robots still there will be certain jobs which human beings alone can perform. Assuming we reach a stage where we will have the expertise & innovation to produce Robots which will be capable of doing almost all the jobs, in such a scenario the employees will be free to take care of other important tasks like interacting with customers or responding to emails. Will it be not beneficial to the Company? In fact, the management will be surprised to know that, if the employees are given the liberty to do such tasks since their primary jobs will be taken care of by Robots then the Company can see more productivity. We still have to go a long way before introducing a full robotics workplace however, with the existing capacity of Robots, if you introduce few Robots still it will do wonders. The time has come to seriously contemplate the need to use Robots in some of the jobs at least. The overall productivity will experience a serious surge in that event.

Conclusion

Robots will make life smoother. It will not be able to dictate terms & conditions to us. It will boost production & will offer a secure work environment for workers, as it will take care of risky jobs. We should not have any reservations about using Robots. It is a machine meant to simplify our life & work. It will never go against our interests. With the advancement of technology, we will get to see upgraded versions of  Robots. It is going to prove extremely beneficial in terms of producing quality products, will consume less time, the rate of accuracy will be on the higher side & profit earning ratio will go up as well.
