Instagram Head, Adam Mosseri, has stated that creators should emphasize relevant content instead of generic tags. The change took effect nearly a month after the Meta-owned platform removed the option that allowed users to follow hashtags. As a user, what's your take on this? Let us know in the comments section. Instagram Head, Adam Mosseri: Why is Instagram only allowing 5 hashtags?
No denying the fact that hashtags have a role to play in search and discovery. When an excessive number of unrelated hashtags are added to posts or reels to game visibility, irrespective of their relevance to the actual content, Instagram does not take it well. In fact, this platform has found it a bit difficult to take care of hashtag stuffing. Hence, the aforesaid measures have been introduced. In a post on Instagram’s @creators account, the platform has stated that it came to light that “using fewer (up to 5), more targeted hashtags rather than generic ones can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram.” This is why such measures were introduced.
The Meta-owned social media platforms also shared certain ideas on how to optimise hashtag usage, recommending creators to use hashtags that are directly relevant to the content they post, which will also enhance their performance. Instagram Head, Adam Mosseri, has made it clear that although hashtags do help in searching, they don't increase your reach. This goes on to reflect that hashtags are not of much importance in increasing the reach, which is a very key element to keep in mind.
Recently, Instagram has presented a new feature that gives users better control over what appears in their Reels tab. Known as “Your Algorithm”, the functionality goes on to add a new small icon with two lines topped with hearts at the top right corner, tapping on which will open a new page that will show what Instagram thinks is most important to a user. This must be a welcome step by Instagram and will be liked by the creators.
Conclusion
Instagram, by limiting posts, is in a way ensuring that it doesn't have to struggle with hashtag stuffing. It has also given certain ideas to the content creators for better performance.
