Deepfake Technology: Can It Be Construed As Beneficial Or a Recipe For Disaster?
Most of us have heard the term "deep fakes", a fairly new term doing rounds everywhere on the internet. Can it be construed as beneficial or a recipe for disaster? You can shrug it off by saying, it hardly impacts us so why bother about it? When we talk about it, we need to know that it can mislead people. Why not delve into it. Read this article to gain more insights into Deepfakes. Your comment will be highly appreciated so please put your remarks or feedback in the comment section.
This term was first up coined in 2017. It relates to Artificial Technology ( AI) generated audio, image, or even video content. Things are manipulated and can potentially mislead people into believing something that is not true. Such deception can't be encouraged, at least a large section of people who know about this technology don't approve of it. The gap between reality & fiction has been bridged by this technology, as it made a lot of progress. People have their reservations about this technology & rightly so. Anything deceptive in nature can always prove harmful so Deepfakes are something that will only find a few takers perhaps.
Deepfake and Fake Videos - How to Protect Yourself?
If you are of the opinion that this technology is out - and - out negative & it must be thrown out of the window then we will urge you to give it a thought once again. You may not be perhaps knowing that it can play a pivotal role in the Entertainment Industry. How? The answer is, that it has the capacity to enable more realistic special effects and even personalized content. In Marketing, Therapy & even Education you can use this technology to make things more intriguing and engaging.
Deepfakes were used by Thai criminals in the year 2022 to impersonate police officers in extortion video calls. In February 2024, another case of Deepfake came to light in Hong Kong where a Multi National Company lost US $ 25.6 Million to a Deepfake video conference call impersonating its Chief Financial Officer. These cases illustrate how deepfakes can cause massive losses or damage our reputation or position.
You must be wondering, are Deepfakes illegal? Well, it is something that is pretty much tricky to answer. The Online Safety Act, 2023 has made sharing Deepfakes in India illegal if done to cause distress. The current laws were not made with Deepfakes in mind. This is making it more ambiguous as well as tricky. Its legal standing is changing. It is fairly complex, to say the least.
Having said that it has some advantages, we have to keep our guard up because Deepfakes can spread disinformation against elected Government & act against the interest of Democracy. It can have a negative bearing on people as fake evidence can be generated to malign the name of reputed people in society. Nothing seems foolproof in this world so it's obvious Deepfakes can't be an exception. This technology can be used for positive and negative purposes.
Conclusion
If we have to describe Deepfakes then probably we will be looking at a situation that will be paradoxical. The reason is, that it is neither absolutely positive nor totally negative. It is baffling to describe. How do you use it? This is a million-dollar question. There is a need to mitigate the negative impact of Deepfakes but how? By introducing effective detection methodology, creating awareness in Media, and putting in place very clear regulations, the misuse or malicious intentions behind using Deepfakes can be put a lid on. Deepfakes have the potential to create a risk element be it societal or ethical in nature. As stated earlier in this article, it has a lot to offer in a positive sense too. So it has to be dealt with in a manner so that maximum benefits can be drawn out of it without letting it harm us.
