Are chatbots Good or Bad? Are chatbots Beneficial or Harmful for Mankind?
Are chatbots beneficial or harmful for mankind? We will analyze this question and find a plausible answer. Chatbot is a common term in today's world. There is plenty of nitty-gritty associated with chatbots that needs to be analyzed. So let's get going. Keep reading our articles. Your feedback goes a long way in motivating us to write intriguing articles on technical or digital concepts. Use the comment section to write your feedback.
The first chatbot came into existence in 1966. It was named as Eliza". It was developed by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT. Weizenbaum is regarded as the pioneer of Artificial Intelligence ( AI). What Eliza did was that it encouraged the development of future sophisticated chatbots. So the contribution of Joseph Weizenbaum is colossal as far as chatbots or AI is considered.
Eliza gave the impression that it could understand the program, but in reality, that was not the case. It could not understand what was said however, it created an illusion around and gave a feeling that it was smart enough to understand or comprehend what was being said.
AI Chatbots: Understanding the Benefits and Limitations
One pertinent question that must be bothering our esteemed readers would be, how did Eliza work? In 1966, we were not as advanced as we are at present, especially in regard to chatbots and AI. The following paragraph will address your curiosity as far as this question is concerned.
The users were required to type in conversational phrases on an electronic typewriter which was connected to a mainframe. Eliza would review the input and for this purpose, a pattern-recognition algorithm was put to use. The primary function of Eliza was to demonstrate the superficiality of human-computer interaction however, it went on to become a cornerstone in the field of chatbots and AI.
Chatbots have revolutionized the way we interact with technology. It has touched almost every aspect be it health care or customer service. So it has been remarkable, but it has its drawbacks. We must weigh its benefits and drawbacks before deciding whether it is beneficial or harmful for mankind.
If we look into the positives of chatbots then we must take into account the fact that they can automate tasks thereby freeing humans for other tasks considered more complicated. So it adds to efficiency. There is no doubt that this is useful for us. Another major benefit revolves around the fact that it can extend 24 x 7 support and fast response. People with disabilities or even language barriers can draw plenty of benefits from it. So overall it impacts us positively.
Now let's look at the negative side of Chatbot. It can kill off jobs related to customer service or data entry. If something leads to unemployment then surely it cannot be regarded as something very beneficial by any stretch of the imagination. Empathy or human touch is missing when chatbots are pressed into action. It can compromise with user data so it has a risk element that cannot be totally neglected.
Conclusion
We have seen that chatbots are significant and pretty beneficial, however, it has a negative side to them that cannot be ignored either. It's a catch-22 situation whether to deploy it or not. We can deploy chatbots that are responsible and accountable emphasizing human well-being, and in that event, it can serve the purpose to a great extent. We need to find ways to ensure that its potential risk is mitigated and it gets used only for beneficial use. This is where we have to give maximum attention. Technical advancements must benefit mankind and potential risks must be controlled as much as we can. So future chatbots will have to be more beneficial and sophisticated having minimal risk elements for mankind. We have to work towards designing such chatbots.
