Space Exploration: Facets and Risk Elements of Space Travel

We may think that the astronauts are very fortunate since they get to experience unique things that usually remain an unfulfilled dream for an ordinary person. This statement is correct, but there are challenges and limitations in such space travel. It is undoubtedly a big deal to be able to visit space. It poses before the astronauts numerous challenges. Before such a visit, they have gone through rigorous training. They have to be mentally and physically extremely fit. They have to clear plenty of tests. Sometimes they have to remain in isolation in a simulator for a long period of time for mental conditioning. It's not easy by any stretch of imagination.

This article will provide us with a trove of information regarding the challenges associated with space travel and provide more insights about the risk elements of space travel. So read this article till its end and share your ideas and feedback. Drop your comment in the comment section. Your feedback not only encourages us, but also enlightens us. So we value your comment very highly.

The very thought of visiting space fascinates us. It has captivated our imagination. The majority of people would love to be part of space exploration. It is difficult to resist the temptation if we get the unique opportunity to visit space. No one would like to turn down such an offer if it comes our way. Think for a split second and try to answer the following questions before accepting any such offer. Is it really a risk-free journey? Is our stay in space extremely safe? Is living and working in space as easy as a cake walk?

Is living and working in Space as easy as a Cake Walk? Is Our Stay in Space Extremely Safe?

Yes, technological advancements have empowered us and have allowed us to venture into space, but is living and carrying out various research in space as simple as doing it on Earth? The answer is a resounding "No" to speak the truth.

Be it navigating, communicating, or doing a very simple task like breathing, everything is challenging in space. Life is far easier on Earth in comparison to space. When you are on a space mission, you are subjected to challenges for almost everything that you do. It is never smooth sailing. Space is not a friendly place. In order to manoeuvre, you have to overcome plenty of hostile scenarios.

Some Major Challenges of Space Exploration are Stated Below

  • The absence of gravity is something that leads to bone loss and muscle weakness. The astronauts have to exercise regularly or else microgravity can pose a real danger to their physical well-being.
  • Space debris, like rocket parts, can be threatening to the astronauts and the spacecraft. The astronauts have to be wary of such debris. This debris poses a serious threat. If one such piece hits the spacecraft, then it can hamper the whole operation.
  • Spacecraft should be equipped and capable enough of producing food, such as hydroponics or aeroponics, so that astronauts can sustain and survive for a long period of time out there.
  • Space radiation is one such factor that is considered to be a great threat to the astronauts. Exposure to radiation can lead to cancer and heart ailments. Such diseases are life-threatening.
  • Another aspect that is unsettling is the fact that real-time communication with Earth is not possible from space owing to the distance. So the astronauts experience signal delays. Even a communication blackout is witnessed, especially during solar conjunctions.
  • Having an advanced navigation system in a spacecraft is a must. E.g.. Star trackers, inertial measurement units, etc. In the absence of such an advanced navigation system, the entire operation may experience situations that may harm the process and operation as a whole.
  • Spacecraft should be equipped enough to purify and recycle air and must be capable of removing impurities like carbon dioxide. This is an extremely important measure that the spacecraft must be capable of doing.
  • The physical and mental health of astronauts must not deteriorate, as this can act as a major threat. Anxiety, sleep disorders, or depression can be experienced due to long-term isolation. The spacecraft should have systems sound enough to protect against the spread of any infectious diseases.

The confinement of long-term space travel is never easy. The astronauts are well-trained, so it gets somewhat easier for them to tackle such harsh conditions. Even then, the risk element of space travel is too large. The astronauts have to face plenty of hardships. It looks glamorous and fascinating, but the reality is quite different.
