The navigation system is a  computing system meant to support navigation. Navigation systems are tools or technologies used to guide vehicles, ships and flights. These instruments are important in the context of guiding the drivers, pilots, captains etc to move in the right direction. Safety comes first so the current navigation systems are competent enough to provide that safety by guiding the person who is in charge of that vehicle. Loss of human lives in the form of accidents can't be accepted especially due to misguided directions made available to the person who is in the driver's seat be it cars, planes, or ships.

There are Three Main Types of Navigation Systems and They Are as Follows 


  • Celestial.
  • G.P.S.
  • Map and Compass. 


1. Celestial Navigation System


This is also known as the astronavigation system. It is in practice since ancient times and is still relevant. Celestial bodies and stars are used for position fixing so that the navigator can ascertain the actual physical situation.

2. G.P.S.


It is a global navigation satellite system signifying it is a satellite navigation system with global coverage. When we talk about a  G.P.S. navigation system then basically we are referring to a G.P.S. receiver and audio/video components used in cars or as smartphone apps.

3. Map and Compass


You may not use Map and Compass as a means to navigate till the time your G.P.S. units and navigation apps are working fine. In case, your battery dies then what do you do? In such a situation, you fall back on maps and compass navigation so that by means of map and Compass you can navigate properly.

These are the three forms of navigation systems, we tend to use for the purpose of navigating safely and accurately. Marine navigation is all about planning and directing a vessel's voyage. Some key navigation systems used in ships ( maritime ) are stated below :

5. Speed and distance log device

Navigation System Used in Cars 


A car's navigation system relies on GPS to figure out the current location of the vehicle by satellite. In the absence of G.P.S data, the system falls back on the cellular network for data. The system can also take the help of other connected devices in order to update traffic-related information etc.
