Meta has Decided to Pause the AI Models' Launch in Europe Because of the Irish Request
Meta has decided to pause the AI models' launch in Europe because of the Irish request. Let's study this article in its totality to have more knowledge on this topic. Meta has received complaints so Meta has decided to take this step. It also got a call from advocacy group NOYB to data protection authorities in France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway, and Spain to act against the company.
Irish privacy regulator has told it to delay its plan to harness data from Facebook & Instagram users so Meta platforms will not launch its Meta AI Models in Europe as of now. At issue is Meta’s plan to use personal data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models without seeking consent. However, the company has said it would use publicly available and licensed online information. In fact, Meta has been told by the Irish Privacy Watchdog to delay training its large language models ( I.I.Ms) using public content shared by Facebook & Instagram adult users.
Meta Halts Launch Of AI Models In Europe Due To Irish Privacy Regulator's Directive
“We’re disappointed by the request from the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), our lead regulator, on behalf of the European DPAs … particularly since we incorporated regulatory feedback and the European DPAs have been informed since March,” the company said in an updated blog post. It has stated that the Irish request is in fact a step backward for European innovation and competition in AI development.
Meta believes that without including/incorporating local information, Meta would be able to only extend people a second-rate experience. We must keep in mind the fact that Meta will not be able to launch Meta AI in Europe at the moment.
Meta has stated that the delay in the launch of its AI models would also enable it to address requests from Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The ICO welcomed Meta’s decision, saying it would continue to monitor major developers of generative AI, including Meta, to review the safeguards they have put in place and ensure the information rights of UK users are protected.
Conclusion
Meta has taken the decision after several European countries have expressed their displeasure and concern. Meta has decided to honor the decision of these European countries in regard to launching its AI models.
