Introduction To Materials Science: Definition, Facts, And Their Properties

In this article, we will focus on the study of properties and applications of various materials including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites called Materials Science. You may be wondering is this field so very important? It has been responsible for some path-breaking work and innovations. It is applied in consumer products, construction, energy, nanotechnology, healthcare, tissue engineering,   aerospace, and drug delivery. This interdisciplinary field of study is given priority, as it has a lot of potential that we will explore in this article.

The study of the structure, properties, and processing method of materials and their use in engineering can be described as Materials Science. It relies on Physics and Chemistry in order to figure out how materials behave and then design processes to manipulate. It will facilitate the development of the next generation of materials which will come handy in modern innovations. So it can contribute immensely therefore, it is regarded highly beneficial.

What Are The Properties and Facts of Materials In Material Science?

It is important to highlight that there are four classification of materials and they are Ceramics, Metals, Polymers and Composites. Materials Scientists have got a role to play in almost everything related to everyday life be it shoes or solar panels etc. We must also include the composition of material since the topic is Materials Science. It can be explained as a combination of different elements, compounds or substances that forms a material.

Perhaps you are keen to figure out why Materials Science has been so highly rated or considered beneficial?. If you want to find the answer, you have to take into account the fact that it has largely contributed to developing and designing implants, diagnostic equipment, etc. It has also played a pivotal role in developing batteries, supercapacitors, and other devices, as well as encouraging new industries and job avenues. It is also considered valuable in improving and enhancing the performance of high-strength alloys and advanced ceramics.

Materials Science, despite having plenty of benefits, also comes with some limitations or drawbacks. Certain material manufacturing processes are either hazardous or create pollution or toxicity, which is not healthy by any stretch of the imagination. Materials science depends to a great degree on rare earth elements, which are scarce. Materials Science has to comply with certain regulations, which are challenging, to say the least.

Materials Science has produced advanced technologies for Smartphones, it has been a great boon in developing medical implants like contact lenses, dental implants etc. It has extended a big help in developing advanced materials used in Defense applications and even in Aerospace. It has also contributed as a beneficial tool in developing advanced energy storage and conversion technologies like solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, etc.

There is a need to take certain measures in order to maximize the potential of Materials Science. For this to happen, we have to educate and impart proper training to next generation of Materials Scientists. Fund must be arranged as more investigation/ research must take place. Experts from other domains like Researchers related to other fields, Engineers and Material Scientists must be encouraged to extend their services in resolving challenges. Interdisciplinary collaboration can create more opportunities and mitigate area of weakness associated with Materials Science. Further, use of sustainable or bio-based material will go a long way in tackling environmental issues. These measures will make Materials Science more potent and will strengthen it remarkably so that we can obtain more benefits.

Conclusion

Materials Science has exhibited and demonstrated beyond doubt, it is relevant and productive. We have to create the right environment for further exploration of the same. It has benefits alongside certain drawbacks. With more research going into it, we would be able to find ways to mitigate the weakness of Materials Science. A proper policy to develop this interdisciplinary field can go a long way to serve our interest and produce the desired outcome. It can create new openings / opportunities provided it is given enough support.
