Superalignment: Address the Long-Term Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) Risks
Open AI has taken a call regarding disbanding its "Superalignment" team, which is meant to address the long-term Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) risks. In fact, its readiness team is also going to be closed down. These measures have raised a few eyebrows, as it relates to the company's priorities and abilities to ensure the safe development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Miles Brundage who happens to be the senior advisor for AGI readiness has stated that "neither Open AI nor any other frontier Lab is ready and the world is also not ready'. Maybe there is a tussle of sorts between Open AI's original mission and its commercial interests or ambitions.
Certain Reasons Are Behind The Disbanding of AGI Teams
Certain reasons are behind the disbanding of AGI teams. First up products like ChatGPT and DALLE -E are commercial products. Such products may have priority over AGI research. Secondly, scarcity or difficulties in securing resources must have been another major roadblock. These factors must have contributed to the disbanding of AGI teams. Due to high opportunity cost OpenAI has decided to disband the AGI Readiness team as stated by a departing exec.
The AGI Readiness team's break up took place when Open AI was believed to be planning the restructuring of the company as a for-profit business. This was after top executives like CTO Mira Murati, research VP Barret Zoph, and research chief Bob McGrew left the AI company on the same day in September. Brundage has made it clear that he has taken a call to leave OpenAI since the opportunity cost has gone up therefore, if he conducts research externally it will be better.
For the unversed, it is important to state that AGI is a theoretical concept of an AI system that can imitate or even surpass human intelligence while doing a variety of tasks. It is strongly believed by some we are going to achieve it pretty soon while few believe that it is a hard nut to crack in fact it is impossible to attain.
Conclusion
Open AI has disbanded the Superalignment team just one year after it was announced. The AI powerhouse has its own reason and logic behind making this decision. You may agree or disagree, but surely there must be a sound logic that compelled such a decision. The idea is to focus on scientific and technical breakthroughs to control AI systems that are considered far smarter and more competent than humans to stop them from going rogue.
