Most Interesting Facts about ROSCOSMOS-Russian Federal Space Agency
It was formed on 25th February, 1992. Its annual budget is 176 billion rubles. It is owned by the Russian Government. The mission control center of ROSCOSMOS is in Korolyov. On February 22, 2019, ROSCOSMOS announced the construction of its new headquarters in Moscow, the National Space Centre.
USA & Russia have been at loggerheads with each other for a long period of time. Both the countries are very keen to establish their supremacy therefore, they are competing with each other in almost every field. Let it be in terms of business, arms race, oil exploration, science & technology, or space exploration. Even after the Cold War, this fierce competition between these two giants continued. Both the countries wanted desperately to send their space mission to the moon before the other one, at one given point in time. Do you know which organization from the USA & Russia was the one who wanted to prove that they were far more advanced & superior than the other one?. Well, it's none other than NASA & ROSCOSMOS.
In this post, we will highlight certain interesting and unknown facts about ROSCOSMOS.
Interesting and Unknown facts about ROSCOSMOS.
ROSCOSMOS is a state corporation for space activities. In 2015, it was merged with United Rocket & Space Corporation. When the Soviet Union was in existence from those days, Russia has been contributing to space exploration. Initially, Soviet Space Programme had no central agency. Later on, when the Soviet Union disintegrated/broke up then on 25th February 1992, the Russian space agency came into existence. Its first director was Yuri Koptev.
The world's first space station was built by the Soviet Union. It was launched on 19th April 1971. It was called " Salyut 1 ". The current International Space Station ( ISS ) is supported by as many as 5 space agencies and they are ROSCOSMOS, European Space Agency, NASA, JAXA, and CSA.
In ISS, the Russian Orbital segment is used for Russia's research. In ISS, a life support system and facilities for keeping 2 crew members quarter is sent by a module launched on 12th July, 2000, by a proton rocket. It is known as "Zvezda".
The operation part in ISS for the Russian part is the Zvezda Service Module. ISS is divided into two parts. One part belongs to Russia called as Russian Orbital Segment ( R.O.S.) and the other part is called a US Orbital Segment ( USOS ). The part that belongs to Russia is taken care of by ROSCOSMOS. When ISS was launched, it's first Orbital was known as " Zarya ", also called as Functional Cargo Block. It was launched in November 1998, by a Proton rocket. In the initial stage, prior to the construction of ISS, it used to aid in electrical power, storage, propulsion & guidance. After Salyut 1, Russia also made a secret space station program known as " Almaz."
From 1973 to 1976, three space stations were sent into space and they were Salyut 2, Salyut 3, and Salyut 5. In 1977, Russia also launched another space station called Salyut 6. It remained in Orbit for 1764 days. Subsequently came Salyut 7 & MIR.
MIR was a very powerful space station and it remained in low earth orbit for a long period of time. In fact, it remained active from 1986 to 2001. It was a big microgravity research laboratory. Lots of research related to Space exploration as well as research-based on Biology, Human Biology, Astronomy, Physics etc were conducted in M.I.R.
Even now for the crew members of ISS, a Cargo Spacecraft of ROSCOSMOS is sent. It is called " Progress". It carries food and other essential items for the crew members of ISS.
The headquarters of ROSCOSMOS is Moscow. "Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center " is based in Star City which facilitates the training of Astronaut. ROSCOSMOS has two major launching sites and they are Vostochny Cosmodrome & Baikonur Cosmodrome. In fact, Baikonur Cosmodrome was World's first space launch facility. It is situated in Kazakhstan.
This place has been taken on lease by Russia. This was the launch facility from where Sputnik 1 & Vostok 1 were launched.
Certain other interesting facts must be included in this post to make it more informative. For instance, the Mastermind behind the first satellite, Sputnik 1 was Sergei Korolev. Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey into outer space and Valentina Tereshkova is the first and youngest woman to have flown in space.
Conclusion
This post gives us enough information about the contribution made by Russia and ROSCOSMOS in the field of space exploration. Russia knew that in the future space will become extremely important therefore, it took this field very seriously. Undoubtedly, Russia & ROSCOSMOS have achieved a lot in space exploration. It won't be unfair to rate ROSCOSMOS at par with NASA. Russia has produced some brilliant Engineers and Astronauts and has been successful in developing advanced spacecraft by using its superior technology. The glory of ROSCOSMOS and its success rate in launching a successful space mission is massive.
ROSCOSMOS is equipped with all the sophisticated and advanced facilities required for space exploration.
In times ahead ROSCOSMOS is likely to become even more robust. It has unveiled a lot of information about space which goes on to reflect its superiority.
