This article is about the founder of Wikipedia. As we all know Wikipedia is regarded very highly. Wikipedia is extremely popular & a lot of people refer to it every now & then. So the curiosity to know about Wikipedia and about its founder is always there amongst the readers. Keeping in mind the need to address this question, we have decided to publish this article.

Who is the founder of Wikipedia?

Jimmy Donal Wales or Jimbo is the co-founder of Wikipedia. He also happens to be the co-founder of a website called Wikia. He is renowned for Wikipedia & Wikia. He is an American entrepreneur.

He was born in 1966 on 7th August in Alabama ( Huntsville). From his early days, he was very interested in reading. His father was a grocery store manager while his mother ran a small private school.

He went to Randolph school, a university - preparatory school, and completed his graduation. He later completed his master's in finance from the University of Alabama. 

Jimmy Wales taught at two universities when he was in graduate school although he left before completing  Ph.D. for a job in finance. It must be mentioned, that he also worked as Research Director of a Chicago futures and options firm. So as you all can see, he gained plenty of experience and qualifications which perhaps helped him to move ahead in his life and achieve so much of name & fame.

Wales went on to establish Wikipedia in the year 2001 with Larry Singer. Wikipedia was launched on 15th January 2001. Wikipedia was used by the user to access free information on various topics and got a lot of prominences and gained immense popularity. 

As the online encyclopedia became a very useful instrument and started catering to the needs of the readers, Wales soon became the project's promoter as well as spokesman. Although it is believed that he is the co-founder of Wikipedia however, according to him  Wikipedia, was solely founded by him.  He also happens to be the co-founder of  Wikia which is a for-profit wiki hosting service. It was established in the year 2004.

It is significant to mention out here, that he holds the " community founder " position in the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, this is, however, a nonprofit charitable organization. It was established to operate Wikipedia. You will be amazed to know that Wikipedia went on to become the world's largest encyclopedia. 

So you can see the impact of Wikipedia is quite strong in the online world and Wales has been successful in providing necessary information to its readers maintaining the requisite standard expected from it.  Wales has undoubtedly worked very hard to ensure that Wikipedia becomes a strong online encyclopedia and in 2006, Time Magazine included him in their list of 100 most influential people, this goes on to reflect the kind of achievement Wales has made over the years by utilizing his skills and talent.

Conclusion 

Wikipedia is the world's largest encyclopedia and this is no mean achievement by any stretch of the imagination. To a great degree, Wales has been primarily responsible for this achievement.  Wales has done a lot to ensure that Wikipedia reaches the position it has reached today.  Hats off to this man for making this encyclopedia a real success. He has set the right example for all upcoming entrepreneurs and proved that dreams come true when people remain committed to the cause and show conviction in it.
