India leads Global AI Adoption. What is the Current Status of AI in India?
AI is likely to be a game-changer. It brings to the table plenty of benefits, thereby drawing traction. Although certain elements of AI need to be put under the scanner, and can be considered pretty harmful. The youth brigade or youth in India has realised the potential of AI and is showing a great zeal in dealing with AI. As stated earlier, AI fascinates, but it is adding to screen time, keeping people hooked to it. So when we talk about digital well-being, then AI is likely to have a mixed impact, having its merits and demerits.
It has come to light that countries like India, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa are more into using generative AI compared to countries regarded as far richer. This trend is worth looking into. So users in such countries tend to spend much more time on screens every day, which is. If you go by a recent study, which is based on responses from over 14,600 people across 14 countries, you will see some intriguing facts and outcomes. It throws light on the fact that younger adults are the biggest users of AI tools across the world. Over 50 per cent of 35 use AI actively, and most of them have strongly opined that it is useful in their day-to-day lives. Many of the respondents have received and completed training to learn how to use AI better, which reveals they feel AI is significant and productive to a great degree.
India's AI Revolution: India Leading the World in AI Talent Acquisition
Strengthening economies that are growing at a great pace with AI skills is not just associated with technologies, but to a great extent, it opens avenues to unlock the potential of every individual so that they can avail a brighter future. Of course, there is a need to design and develop such tools with utmost responsibility, maintaining transparency. Yes, a lot of people have reservations about using AI. They don't find AI reliable. So, a lot of people stay away from AI altogether, while some of them have trust issues with AI, as they feel AI is not worth trusting.
Along with its rapid adoption of generative AI, India also stands out when it comes to digital engagement. While most respondents (72.3 per cent) said technology has improved their social connections, only 5.9 per cent feel it has made them worse. India leads all surveyed countries in AI use, with 66.4 per cent active users. Over 89 per cent find AI useful, and more than 84 per cent trust it. AI training is also widespread, with 77.9 per cent having completed some form of training, and 56.8 per cent plan further training next year. India is keen to tap the potential of AI. The youth sees plenty of benefits in AI. If you go by the percentage of AI users or the number of people receiving training on AI, it shows that the youth of India reckon AI is going to be a great boon.
In countries like India, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa, where AI is considered beneficial, young people do their socialising online. Of course, this can lead to a situation that results in emotional highs and lows. Another negative aspect is that higher screen time leads to poorer well-being and, in some cases, lower life satisfaction. The OECD and Cisco started their joint Digital Well-being Hub in 2024 to study how technology affects people’s lives and health. The new findings highlight the importance of addressing both the benefits and risks of digital life. The report claimed that while AI adoption is underway, especially in emerging economies, governments and businesses must focus on digital literacy, closing the skills gap, and supporting mental and emotional well-being.
Conclusion
AI is set to rule and influence people to a great degree. The youth of some countries have embraced AI more than others countries. AI can play a pivotal role. It has plenty of potential. It incorporates positive and negative angles. A certain degree of precaution must be taken when we use AI tools. The weakness must be mitigated by formulating better strategies and policies. This is the crux of the story.
