National(India)Strategy on Artificial Intelligence by NITI Aayog: India

The Government of India is very keen to give impetus to Artificial Intelligence. There is a good reason for it as well. Going forward artificial intelligence will become an integral tool in our lives and will have a strong bearing on the economic sector and security agencies will have to rely heavily on it as well. In fact, all the industries and sectors will be impacted by it. The Government of India is aware of the ground realities hence, they are initiating measures to boost artificial Intelligence ( AI).

The Government of India in its Budget of 2018 - 19, had given more emphasis on building technological capabilities and mandated NITI Aayog to initiate a national program to direct the efforts of the Government in relation to artificial Intelligence. This Budget gave a strong signal and reflected, how seriously Government is approaching this field.

Going by the instruction and wishes of the Government of India, NITI Aayog decided to go ahead with this. It adopted a policy  based on three major elements or steps :

(1) Undertaking exploratory proof-of-concept AI projects in various areas.

(2) Crafting a national strategy for building a vibrant AI ecosystem in India.

(3) Collaborating with various experts and stakeholders.

National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence ( NSAI)

NITI Aayog released India's National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence ( NSAI) in June 2018, which was another major development in this direction.

The strategy called # AI for all was a comprehensive model to direct the efforts in such a manner so that it incorporates the economic potential of Artificial Intelligence with social development and inclusive growth and strengthens the image of India as the " AI Garage of the World".

India joined an elite group of countries having a solid and well-defined Artificial Intelligence strategy after this. It was another major step that reflected India's desire to excel in this field and integrate AI with the overall developmental measures for society and the country as a whole.

Was it a paradigm shift in the policies of India? The priority attached to AI development was a new step in the right direction, if one wishes to sum up the whole development then it may be portrayed as a right step in the right direction at the right time. The Government of India wanted India to be a pioneer in this field. It was evident any country seizing the initiatives in this domain early on, will have a conducive environment for growth and will hold a distinct advantage in the long run.

India knew, that if proper infrastructure is developed to support AI then she will have a great edge in the future. India never lacks resources in terms of manpower and talent. Yes, financial backup of the Government and open support of Government machinery has been a constraint with a lot of development activities however, going by the grit of the Government of India it appears that India will use all resources at her disposal to be a global leader in the field of AI.

As a follow-up to NSAI, the vertical is pursuing a series of strategy and implementation documents. AIRAWAT, which lays down India's approach for the development of AI-specific cloud-computing infrastructure was released in January 2020. The presence of AIRAWAT will surely help to access various hardware considered significant in the context of driving AI-related research & development initiatives.

So, it is quite clear things are being streamlined in a phase-wise manner in India so that Artificial Intelligence can be used as a tool to kick start a series of developmental activities. The best part is all these initiatives are being supervised by the Government or its agencies so that in case any loopholes exist, the same can be plugged in immediately. AI is getting priority in India. The Government is trying to tap the potential associated with this field by extending the necessary support in this regard.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence is going to be the order of the day in each & every field. This is a known fact. Various developed or developing countries want to be the beneficiary of this. These countries are fully aware of the fact, that AI can provide a boost to their economic status and enhance their clout in the International arena. Nobody wants to lag behind, but every country does not have the necessary skills, equipment as well technical support, and manpower to push such activities.

India, fortunately, possesses all the above-mentioned traits and fulfills all the conditions to be a giant in this field. India tick all the boxes considered mandatory to be a global leader in the domain of AI. By adopting a robust strategy and directing the necessary resources, the policymakers have initiated a major step to make India a major force in this field. Such measures will yield a favorable outcome as far as India is concerned impacting her economy in a positive way.
